Book of the Month

Book of the Month – February 2017 – Before I Let You In, by Jenny Blackhurst

I read two 5 star books in February, but again, my choice for Book of the Month was an easy one, as Before I Let You In is a fabulous psychological thriller that I loved and believe will be loved by many others too.

At the time of writing this post, this book is just 99p on Kindle and only £3.85 in paperback via Amazon, so if you like the sound of it grab it while it’s at such bargain prices.

Blurb:

BEFORE I LET YOU IN is the brand new novel from Jenny Blackhurst, the #1 Kindle bestselling author of HOW I LOST YOU, which Clare Mackintosh called ‘utterly gripping’. If you don’t know who is walking through the door, how do you know if you should let them in? Perfect for fans of Louise Jensen’s THE SISTER and Tracy Buchanan’s NO TURNING BACK, Linda Green and B. A. Paris.

Karen is meant to be the one who fixes problems.

It’s her job, as a psychiatrist – and it’s always been her role as a friend.

But Jessica is different. She should be the patient, the one that Karen helps.

But she knows things about Karen. Her friends, her personal life. Things no patient should know.

And Karen is starting to wonder if she should have let her in . . .

My Review:

After having absolutely loved How I lost You, and talking anyone who would listen into reading it, I was a little nervous about this author’s second book. The first one was so good, could her second impress me anywhere near as much? In a word, YES! Before I Let You In is incredible, and now I want to tell everyone to read this one too.

This story focusses on three close friends, Karen, Bea and Eleanor, all with quite different lives. Bea is single, Eleanor is married with children, Karen is a psychiatrist and is definitely the one who tends to fix things when Bea and Eleanor get themselves in a pickle. However, what happens when the friend who always manages to keep things together is faced with a patient who challenges the acceptable roles of doctor and patient, and starts pushing Karen’s boundaries? What could possibly happen if that level-headed friend starts to lose control over her perfectly controlled life? Read this book to find out.

I had so many thoughts and questions early on, my mind was a whirlwind of what ifs. Although it felt like there was so much going on, I never felt confused, as the story was so fast paced and flowed well. The mix of characters and how they were all connected was brilliantly done. I loved every minute of it.

On the last night of reading this, I had planned an early night, due to feeling so tired, but I just couldn’t put this book down, and ended up reading until 1.30am. It wouldn’t have been too bad if that had been the end of it, but I then struggled to fall asleep, as there was so much still going on in my mind. What a roller coaster of a ride! Absolutely loved it!

I highly recommend this to anyone into psychological suspense thrillers. This one is a cracker! Buy this book, read it and love it too. You’ll be pleased you did and you can thank me later.

  1. I’ve heard so much about this one, I cannot believe I haven’t read it yet! It’s been on my radar forever! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I like that even though you had plenty of questions, you never felt confused about the story, it’s a good sign!

    1. If you have a TBR pile anything like mine, then I fully understand why you haven’t had chance to read this yet 😉 I was never confused, just had lots of questions. Often the sign of a good psychological thriller. I hope you enjoy it too, once you eventually get round to reading it 🙂
